This Georgian lowboy side table originates from 18th-century England and is fashioned from solid dark brown oak with a warm, aged timber finish. The rectangular top has a moulded edge, hovering above a single long frieze drawer fitted with an ornate brass batwing escutcheon and handle. All four legs display unusual ogee bracket-shaped shoulders, tapering downwards to original pad feet resting directly on the floor. The practical proportions measure 75.5 cm in height, 90 cm in width, and 45 cm in depth. Traditional country house placement positions such a table beside the front door as a functional entryway drop zone for post and keys, or in a hallway for surface display. It also serves effectively as a compact writing desk or a bedside lamp table in a bedroom, combining historical presence with everyday utility in contemporary interiors.

FAQs

Georgian side tables, produced between 1714 and 1830, are defined by balanced proportions, clean lines, and utilitarian elegance. Early-to-mid Georgian pieces often incorporate native woods such as oak and feature cabriole or tapered legs with pad feet and frieze drawers.

English oak, walnut, and mahogany were the primary timbers utilised during the Georgian period. Construction methods included hand-sawn timber, hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, and cast brass drop handles with decorative backplates.

Authentic 18th-century oak tables exhibit irregular hand-cut dovetail joinery, pegged mortise-and-tenon frame construction, and subtle wood shrinkage consistent with age. Unfinished drawer bottoms and oxidation marks near original brass ironwork are key authenticity indicators.

A Georgian oak side table functions as an entryway console, hallway accent, or bedside table. Pair the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork, minimalist ceramic vases, or modern table lamps to create a curated contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Maintain antique oak by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged sunlight to prevent timber movement and cracking.
