Georgian Oak Lowboy

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An attractive George III oak lowboy dating from around 1770, retaining a rich mellow colour and pleasing proportions. With its compact footprint, original brass handles and distinctive Gothic-arched kneehole, it makes an elegant occasional table, side table or lamp table.

The plank top with ogee-moulded front and side edges sits above one long and two short cockbeaded drawers with pine linings. The lowboy is fitted with brass swan-neck handles and stands on straight legs with chamfered inner angles.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 72 cm

Width: 84 cm

Depth: 44 cm

CONDITION

The lowboy is in good, solid condition with an attractive rich colour and a sound top. The drawers run smoothly, the joints are stable and the brass handles appear to be original.

There are ink stains, light scratches and minor knocks commensurate with age and use. There are some small losses to the cockbeading, together with historic repairs to the cockbeading on the left-hand drawers. Overall, it is a handsome and characterful example, retaining a particularly attractive colour and presenting very well for its age.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is an 18th-century small table equipped with drawers, originally designed as a dressing table or side table in British homes during the reign of King George III.

Georgian lowboys were typically constructed from solid oak or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, back-to-front drawer linings, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sawn timber marks on the undersides, irregular hand-cut dovetails, original steel locks, and natural oxidisation along the unvarnished interior drawer surfaces.

A lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console table or entryway accent, paired with a contemporary wall mirror above and minimalist ceramic lamps to contrast the historic oak grain.

Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood surface.
