This Georgian lowboy side table originates from the 19th century. Built from oak with a dark brown timber finish, the piece features a rectangular top above a layout of three front drawers fitted with ornate brass swing handles and backplates. The front incorporates a gently curved, shaped apron and stands upon four slender cabriole legs ending in pad feet. Visible wear includes surface grain patterns and natural variation in the wood tones. The item measures 805 mm wide, 475 mm deep, and 710 mm high. Suited for placement in a hallway or beside the front door, it functions as a practical surface for mail, keys, or decorative objects while providing enclosed storage within its drawers.

FAQs

A lowboy is a small table fitted with drawers, originally created during the 18th century in Great Britain and North America. Designed as a dressing table or side table, it typically features a single upper drawer above a lower tier of drawers supported on cabriole or turned legs.

Georgian lowboys were predominantly constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Construction details include hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, peg-joined mortise and tenon framing, and hand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic 18th-century lowboys exhibit evidence of hand craftsmanship, such as irregular drawer dovetails, hand-planed timber marks on the reverse, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Oxidisation around original iron screws and brass fittings also indicates genuine period age.

A Georgian lowboy functions well as a hallway console, entryway feature, or occasional accent table. Combining historical oak timber with contemporary table lamps, simple ceramics, or a modern wall mirror provides a balanced aesthetic.

Maintain the oak finish by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying beeswax polish annually along the direction of the timber grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and cracking.
