Antique Georgian Oak Side Table | 18th Century

18th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 18th century Georgian side table in oak, a wonderfully characterful period piece with the simple, honest proportions that make Georgian furniture so appealing.

Standing on four sturdy square legs, the table has a strong and well-balanced form that beautifully complements the natural warmth of the oak.

A large drawer to the front offers useful storage and is finished with decorative brass handles, adding a touch of elegance to the otherwise understated design. The oak has developed a gorgeous grain and rich colour, giving the table a lovely sense of age and individuality.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this desirable piece has an enduring quality that has allowed it to remain both useful and attractive for centuries.

Its simplicity is very much part of its charm, making it a beautiful example of traditional Georgian furniture.

FAQs

Georgian oak furniture produced between 1714 and 1830 is characterised by robust timber construction, balanced proportions, and functional design. Common features include hand-dovetailed drawers, square or turned legs, and brass drop handles.

Tables from this period were predominantly crafted from native English oak or imported mahogany. Secondary timbers such as pine or chestnut were frequently utilised for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass handles and iron fittings.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-sawn timber marks, irregular dovetail joints, wood peg joinery, and natural shrinkage across grain direction. Original brassware typically shows natural oxidisation and surface wear consistent with age.

A Georgian side table works well as a hallway console, entryway accent, or living room side surface. Pair dark oak timber with modern table lamps, abstract artwork, or simple ceramic vases to create a balanced contrast between historical and contemporary elements.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve patination. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity fluctuations to prevent wood splitting.
