This George II oak lowboy dates from the Georgian period and serves as a side table in an English Country House interior. The dark brown timber exhibits a rich finish across the oversailing top, three cockbeaded drawers, and arched frieze. Pierced brass trellis backplates with drop handles adorn the drawer fronts, complemented by cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. The side table measures 71 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. Positioned beside the front door, the lowboy provides a practical surface and storage space in a hallway or entryway. The structured design incorporates a shaped apron beneath the central drawer, while the sturdy four-leg construction ensures stability for everyday use.

A lowboy is a small table equipped with one or more rows of drawers, designed in Britain and the American colonies during the 18th century. Produced during the reign of King George II (17271760), these pieces typically featured cabriole legs, shaped aprons, and were utilised as side tables or dressing tables.

18th-century British lowboys were predominantly constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Drawer linings were usually made from pine or oak, and drawer fronts were embellished with cast brass handles featuring pierced or solid backplates.

Authentic George II furniture exhibits signs of hand construction, including hand-sawn dovetail joints, irregular peg fastenings, and hand-planed timber surfaces. Genuine 18th-century timber displays natural patination, shrinkage, and age-related wear, along with original brass hardware that shows signs of cast irregularities or oxidisation.

A Georgian lowboy serves as a compact console table in an entryway, a writing desk in an alcove, or an occasional side table in a living room. Pairing historic dark oak with contemporary ceramics or modern lighting creates a balanced contrast within contemporary interior schemes.

Preserve antique oak by applying a thin layer of natural beeswax paste once or twice a year to maintain the timbers finish. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or bleaching, and wipe surfaces with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
