George II Oak Single Drawer Side Table, Circa 1740

18th century
Description

A charming 18th century George II oak side table, circa 1740, of pleasingly simple country form and retaining a lovely aged colour and patina.

The rectangular plank top with moulded edge is set above a plain frieze incorporating a single drawer, fitted with a brass drop handle.

Raised on four slender turned legs united by turned peripheral stretchers, terminating in small turned feet. The restrained construction and attractive wear give the table the character associated with early Georgian country furniture.

The oak has developed a wonderfully mellow surface, with numerous marks and variations in colour acquired through nearly three centuries of use.

A particularly useful size, suitable as a side table, lamp table or occasional table, and an appealing example of practical 18th century English furniture.

In good antique condition with expected wear, marks and surface variations commensurate with age and use.

English, circa 1740.

This George II side table dates from the 18th century, around 1740, and is made from solid oak with a warm brown timber colour, brass hardware, and a mellow aged finish showing numerous surface variations and marks from nearly three hundred years of use. It has a rectangular plank top with a moulded edge above a plain frieze with a single drawer fitted with a brass teardrop pull. The base has four slender turned legs connected by turned peripheral stretchers and ending in small turned feet. The table is 71 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Suitable for daily use in a modern home, this practical piece functions well as an end of a sofa table, lamp table, or occasional surface in a living room, hallway, or study. The sturdy construction and compact dimensions make it easy to position alongside seating or against a wall while offering convenient storage within the single drawer.

Constructed during the reign of King George II from 1727 to 1760, these tables bridge the transition between heavy joinery and refined cabinetmaking. Provincial examples frequently retain turned legs and stretcher supports, while London pieces embraced cabriole legs and pad feet.

English country side tables from this era were primarily crafted from solid native timbers, dominated by quarter-sawn oak, fruitwood, and walnut. Hardware typically comprised cast brass teardrop or bail handles, attached with hand-cut brass split pins.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawer linings, and pegs securing mortise and tenon joints. Natural shrinkage across the grain over centuries often results in slightly uneven tops and oval peg heads.

A Georgian oak side table serves effectively as an entryway console, an accent table alongside a modern tailored sofa, or a bedside table. Placing contemporary ceramics or modern lighting atop dark historic oak creates an engaging aesthetic contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the protective patination. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and air conditioning units to prevent the wood from warping or splitting.
