This Edwardian stick and umbrella stand originates from circa 1910, reflecting the classic English Country House style. Constructed from brass and cast iron, the piece presents a gold and black colour scheme comprising a bright tubular brass frame paired with a dark cast iron base. The structure incorporates distinct design elements visible upon inspection, including urn finials at the top, arched top sections, internal dividing rails creating four distinct holding sections, and four block feet supporting the heavy drip tray. Signs of age and wear appear across the metal surfaces with minor tarnishing and surface texture on both the brass uprights and the painted iron base. Standing 61 cm in height, 21.5 cm in width, and 21.5 cm in depth, this compact accessory fits neatly in an entrance hall beside the front door to hold walking sticks, canes, and wet umbrellas.

FAQs

Stick stands became essential domestic furnishings during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to accommodate wet umbrellas and walking canes. Edwardian examples from circa 1900 to 1910 favoured lighter, tubular brass designs with integrated cast iron drip trays, reflecting the practical yet refined aesthetic of the era.

Edwardian stick stands typically combine tubular or solid brass frames with heavy cast iron bases. The cast iron base provided essential stability to prevent tipping, while serving as a watertight drip tray to collect rainwater.

Authentic period pieces exhibit substantial weight in the cast iron base, threaded brass construction, turned finials, and genuine age-related tarnishing or oxidisation on the metal surfaces rather than a uniform lacquered finish.

Position the stand in an entryway, porch, or hallway near the front door to create a functional historical focal point. It can be used as intended for umbrellas and walking sticks, or repurposing as a holder for architectural rolled prints and maps.

Dust the brass regularly with a soft cloth and preserve the natural patina using a mild metal cream if desired. Ensure the cast iron drip tray is kept dry and clear of moisture accumulation to prevent surface rust formation.
