This substantial Georgian library telescope by Gilbert & Co Ltd dates from between 1800 and 1806, exhibiting a solid brass construction with a warm metallic gold finish. The design incorporates a long cylindrical brass barrel, an adjustable support strut, and a draw tube focus, mounted upon a folding tripod base with cabriole legs and pad feet. The manufacturer's engraved marks are visible on the metal, alongside subtle surface wear and patination appropriate for its age. The main lens measures 8 cm in diameter, and the overall length reaches 160 cm when fully extended. Positioned upon an office desk or library table, the telescope adds a distinguished gentleman's library aesthetic to a study or workspace. It operates as a fully functional optical instrument, serving as both a decorative focal point and a practical viewing device for terrestrial or celestial observation. The compact folding tripod stand allows the piece to be securely displayed on flat surfaces within a traditional interior setting.

A Georgian library telescope is an 18th or early 19th-century desktop refractor instrument mounted on a tabletop tripod, designed for terrestrial and astronomical observation within estate studies and private libraries.

These scientific instruments were predominantly constructed from polished brass with ground optical glass lenses, featuring hand-turned fittings, threaded draw tubes, and cast tripod bases.

Authentic period examples typically feature engraved maker signatures near the eyepiece, hand-cut screw threads, unlacquered metal displaying natural oxidisation, and period-specific leg terminations such as pad feet.

Place the instrument prominently on a mahogany office desk, a deep window sill, or a library bookshelf to complement traditional study aesthetics.

Dust the metal body using a soft microfibre cloth while avoiding abrasive chemical polishes that remove historic patina, and clean optical elements strictly with non-abrasive optical cleaners.
