Wooden duck decoys were originally crafted by hunters in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to lure waterfowl. Over time, these functional sporting items transitioned into highly collectible pieces of folk art.

Decoys were typically carved from buoyant woods such as white pine, cedar, or balsa, then hand-painted with oil-based pigments to mimic natural plumage. Many feature lead weights attached to the base and metal eyelets for anchoring lines.

Authentic nineteenth-century decoys exhibit genuine weathering, layered patinas from multiple coats of original paint, and tool marks left by hand-carving instruments like drawknives and hatchets.

These sculptural objects fit well into rustic, traditional, or eclectic schemes, often displayed on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or sideboards to add organic texture and historical character.

Preserve painted wooden items by keeping them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent paint flaking and wood splitting.
