This nineteenth-century church lectern is a Gothic Revival book stand made of solid brass with a polished gold finish. The tabletop surface incorporates four quatrefoil corner cutouts, a central circular medallion engraved with a Gothic monogram, and a scalloped lower ledge to hold books securely. A stepped circular pedestal base supports the reading shelf, complemented by visible circular rivets positioned around the central design. Practical dimensions measure 23 cm high by 28 cm wide and 23 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this heavy item sits on an office desk or study table to support reading material, reference books or display volumes.

Gothic Revival table lecterns emerged during the nineteenth century as part of a renewed interest in medieval ecclesiastical design. Produced primarily for churches, chapels, and private devotional spaces, these stands held missals or sacred texts at an angle during readings.

Victorian missal stands were predominantly cast or sheet brass, frequently featuring turned pedestals and weighted bases for stability. Decorative elements were typically achieved through engraving, fretwork, or pierced metal techniques such as quatrefoil motifs.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display signs of manual construction, such as hand-engraved motifs, threaded stem joints, and weighted bases filled with lead or iron. Natural surface wear and oxidisation in crevices also distinguish historic brass from modern reproductions.

An antique brass lectern functions effectively on an office desk or library table to hold large art volumes, reference books, or tablets. In a kitchen setting, it serves as a functional display for cookbooks while adding metallic contrast to surrounding surfaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent buildup. To maintain patination, avoid harsh chemical polishes and abrasive cleaners, opting instead for a light coat of microcrystalline wax to protect the brass surface.
