This Georgian sarcophagus-shaped cellarette dates from the 1820s and is fashioned from warm brown mahogany with a rich polished timber exterior, accented by flame mahogany veneer panels. The piece stands on carved paw feet and has a stepped lid, an architectural tapered body, and a central brass escutcheon on the front. At 47.5 cm high, 75.5 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, it provides a compact storage container for formal entertaining or practical cellar organisation. In a contemporary interior, this traditional wine cooler serves as a decorative low chest or statement accent piece positioned in an empty corner, a dining room, or a living space. The construction includes visible timber grain patterns, panelled side sections with vertical mouldings, and moulded borders framing the main facade, reflecting the classical design principles of the period.

A cellarette is a wooden cabinet or chest designed to store wine or liquor bottles at room temperature during the 18th and 19th centuries. Typically positioned in dining rooms, these pieces allowed hosts to secure and access beverages without leaving the table.

Georgian cellarettes were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, often featuring flame mahogany veneers and interior bottle divisions. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail joints, solid brass escutcheons, and intricately hand-carved feet, such as lion paw designs.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-planed timber, irregular brass screws, and original lead or zinc lining remnants inside the bottle wells. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-sawn secondary woods like oak or pine, alongside age-appropriate patination around keyholes and hardware mounts.

In contemporary settings, a cellarette functions as a functional side table, entryway accent, or standalone dry bar. Placing it alongside modern soft furnishings or beneath contemporary artwork creates a direct contrast between historical craftsmanship and current design.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber shrinkage, cracking, or veneer lifting.
