A book carrier or trough is a portable wooden stand used in libraries and studies during the late 18th and 19th centuries to transport or display folios and volumes between rooms or upon desks.

High-end cabinet makers typically utilised dense imported hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, featuring finely turned spindle galleries, scroll ends, and pegged joinery.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber patination, hand-cut joinery, screw types, and traditional polishes like French polish, alongside consistent wear patterns appropriate to the age.

It functions effectively on top of a credenza, library desk, or side table, holding curated coffee table books or vintage volumes to add texture and historical interest.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent splitting, and maintain the finish by occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax, avoiding liquid polishes.
