Ntique Regency Rosewood Inlaid Writing Desk Set with Inkwells

19th century
Description

A fine and early Regency period rosewood writing desk set beautifully decorated with delicate mother-of-pearl foliate inlay and complete with its original cut-glass inkwells. This elegant desk piece represents the refined taste and craftsmanship of the early 19th century when exotic woods and intricate inlay were prized in fashionable English interiors.

The sloped writing surface is richly inlaid with scrolling floral motifs enhanced by ebony stringing and a central gilt bronze carrying handle of refined Regency design. Two original square cut-glass inkwells each with a brass screw-top lid sit neatly within recessed compartments on the upper tier. Below, a full-width drawer provides storage for pens, sealing wax, blotting paper or correspondence.

Crafted from well-figured rosewood the piece retains a beautiful mellow patina that contrasts elegantly with the iridescence of the mother-of-pearl. Raised on four small bun feet the writing set has a charming and highly decorative presence, making it a desirable piece for collectors of Regency writing accessories.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency rosewood inkstand is a desktop accessory produced in the early 19th century, designed to hold ink bottles, pens, and small stationery items. These objects frequently incorporated decorative inlays, pen troughs, and lockable drawers for letters.

Nineteenth-century desk sets were commonly fabricated from hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, accented with mother-of-pearl or brass inlay work. Accessories like inkwells were manufactured from cut glass or crystal topped with brass or silver mounts.

Authentic Regency desk pieces feature distinctive construction traits such as fine dovetail joints, brass or shell inlay motifs, natural dark wood grain, and hand-cut glass ink vessels. Period pieces also show evidence of historical hand-crafting rather than modern uniform machining.

An antique inkstand can be placed on a modern home office desk, console table, or library shelf to serve as a decorative focal point. Stying it alongside leather-bound books or contemporary brass lamps creates a balanced contrast of textures.

Keep inlaid rosewood furniture away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood warping and inlay lifting. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood finish.
