This pair of large antique Imari plates dates to 1900 and follows a traditional Japanese Imari style. Each circular charger is formed from porcelain and decorated with hand-painted enamel and gold leaf. Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese ceramic named after the port of Imari in Saga Prefecture, where it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. Authentic Imari pieces usually feature spur marks on the base from kiln firing supports, along with slight imperfections in the glaze and cobalt blue lines that appear slightly blurred under the surface glaze. Additionally, authentic historical examples exhibit subtle hand-painted variations in the motif decoration rather than uniform transfer-printed lines.
