This pair of decorative Japanese Imari plates from 1900 is made from porcelain decorated with enamel and gold leaf. Each piece displays a scalloped lobed rim, a central floral medallion depicting a basket of flowers, and a panelled border adorned with leaves and scrolls in cobalt blue, rust red, green, white, and gold. The visible surface features intricate gilded detailing and traditional glazed patterns in deep blue and reddish tones. The items stand on small gold-coloured metal display stands placed upon a burr wood surface with prominent grain patterns and natural knots. Each plate measures 3.5 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 22 cm deep. These pieces suit placement on a mantelpiece in an English Country House interior scheme, adding traditional colour and pattern to a sitting room or study. They function well displayed together on a shelf, cabinet, or display stand as decorative accents within a traditional room setting.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics crafted in the town of Arita and historically shipped from the port of Imari. Characterised by vibrant underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron-red and gilded ornamentation, this style gained prominent popularity across European households from the seventeenth century onwards.

Traditional Imari ware relies on fine white kaolin porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures for structural density. Craftspeople paint underglaze cobalt blue motifs before the primary kiln firing, followed by hand-application of enamel pigments and gold leaf detailing before secondary low-temperature firings.

Authentic antique Imari ceramics display visible hand-painted brushwork with slight organic variation, alongside characteristic spur marks on the base from kiln supports. The traditional colour combination features deep cobalt blue, rust-red enamel, and gilded highlights over a slightly off-white glaze.

Imari plates can be positioned on brass displays stands along a sideboard or chimneypiece to introduce architectural pattern and rich colour. Grouping multiple pieces on a wall hanging matrix also creates a focused visual feature within a dining room or entrance hallway.

Clean antique Imari porcelain by hand using lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaning materials, chemical polishers, or dishwashers, as these will erode sensitive overglaze enamels and surface gilding over time.
