Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped via the port of Imari, characteristically decorated in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red and gold patterns.

Traditional Imari ceramics are made from fine porcelain clay, painted with cobalt oxide underglaze, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently detailed with iron-red enamels and gilding before a second firing.

Authentic pieces frequently show faint hand-painted irregularities, characteristic iron-red and deep cobalt blue hues, spur marks on the underside from kiln supports, and gentle surface wear to the gilding.
