Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique Japanese Imari plate dates from 1900 and displays hand-painted polychrome decoration in red, blue, green, white and gold. The porcelain surface is glazed and patterned with fan panels, Mount Fuji, floral sprigs, trees, birds and geometric borders, complemented by a central vertical strip adorned with white floral motifs. The circular piece measures 5 cm high, 38 cm wide and 38 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative plate suits placement on a sideboard top to introduce a traditional aesthetic to an interior setting. It integrates well within an English Country House style decor scheme, serving as a display item or decorative accent on flat surfaces.

FAQs

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and is characterised by its signature underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamel embellishments, often accompanied by gilded detailing and panelled compositions.

Craftsmen utilised fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures, applying underglaze blue cobalt oxide before glazing, followed by additional overglaze enamel colours and gold gilding fired in a second, lower-temperature kiln.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit subtle potting irregularities, a smooth foot rim, evidence of hand-painted brushwork under magnification, and characteristic underglaze blue markings or spur marks on the underside.

Displaying the piece on a modern wooden plate stand, grouping it on a gallery wall with complementary ceramics, or placing it atop a dark timber sideboard creates a refined focal point.

Wipe gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or immersion in water which can degrade delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
