This antique Japanese Imari charger dates from 1880 and takes the form of a large circular decorative porcelain plate. The surface displays a hand-painted composition divided into alternating panelled reserves, filled with cobalt blue, iron red and green enamels over a white glaze. The central circle contains a floral medallion surrounded by patterned borders, while the radiating outer sections feature detailed phoenix and pine tree motifs among floral elements. The plate measures 5 cm high, 38 cm wide and 38 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative piece suits display on a sideboard top within an English Country House interior setting. It works well placed flat on a surface or mounted on a wall bracket as a focal point in a dining room, hallway or living area. The vibrant palette of red, blue and green provides a strong visual accent against traditional or transitional furnishings.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares made in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped through the port of Imari. Produced primarily from the late seventeenth century onwards, it is characterized by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red and gilded decoration.

These chargers are crafted from fine kaolin porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures. The design involves underglaze cobalt blue brushwork followed by a glaze firing, after which overglaze enamels, such as iron red, green, and gold, are painted on and fired in a lower-temperature muffle kiln.

Authentic pieces often feature spur marks on the base from kiln support, slight asymmetry in hand-painted details, and wear on the unglazed foot rim. The cobalt blue typically shows subtle variations in depth, and overglaze enamels may display light surface wear consistent with age.

An Imari charger can be displayed on a dark wood sideboard using a wooden or brass plate stand, or mounted as part of a curated gallery wall. The vibrant red and blue hues create a striking focal point when set against neutral or deeply painted walls.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads that could scratch the overglaze enamels. Ensure wall mounting wire or plate hangers use rubber-coated tips to prevent chipping the porcelain edges.
