Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was historically exported to Europe through the port of Imari starting in the seventeenth century. Recognized for its distinctive polychrome palette, it became highly sought after by Western aristocracy and significantly influenced European ceramic production.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay porcelain. The classic design combines underglaze cobalt blue decoration with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilded highlights added during subsequent kiln firings.

Authentic pieces often feature small spur marks on the underside from kiln supports, slight irregularities in the hand-painted decoration, and a heavy, smooth porcelain body. The blue underglaze may show subtle bleed into the glaze, and gilded details typically exhibit natural wear.

Imari plates are commonly styled on acrylic or brass stands upon sideboards, mantels, or bookcases to add saturated colour. They can also be displayed in gallery wall groupings alongside plain or complementary ceramic pieces.

Clean gently by hand using warm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, immersion in water for prolonged periods, and dishwasher use, as these can damage overglaze enamels and gilding.
