Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced around the town of Arita and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed during the seventeenth century, this style typically features cobalt blue underglaze paired with iron-red enamel and gilding overglaze.

Traditional Imari ware was crafted using porcelain clay containing crushed stone known as petuntse. The initial blue designs were painted directly onto unfired body underglaze before a high-temperature firing, followed by hand-painted enamel colours and gold gilding applied during subsequent lower-temperature kiln firings.

Authentic pieces often exhibit slight asymmetrical irregularities from hand potting, visible brushstrokes in the iron-red enamels, and subtle spur marks on the base where the ceramic rested in the kiln. Marking styles on the base can vary, but genuine antique examples typically display characteristic weight, glaze texture, and depth of colour in the underglaze cobalt.

Imari ceramics can be styled as focal display pieces on plate stands, mounted on gallery walls, or arranged within open shelving. The rich contrast of navy blue and terracotta tones provides a classic decorative accent on consoles, sideboards, or mantelpieces in both traditional and contemporary settings.

Clean porcelain by gently wiping it with a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre towel using lukewarm water and mild dish detergent. Avoid soaking the piece, using abrasive sponges, or applying chemical cleaners, as these methods can strip delicate surface gilding and overglaze enamels.
