Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported via the port of Imari. Characterised by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red and gold decoration, it gained widespread popularity across Europe from the late 17th century onwards.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay containing kaolin and petuntse. The decoration involves a multi-stage process: an initial underglaze cobalt blue firing, followed by overglaze enamel painting in rust red, orange, and gold gilding fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-painted line variations, subtle irregularities within the glaze, and unglazed foot rims on the underside. The combination of dense diaper pattern paneling, central floral roundels, and characteristic cobalt blue and iron-red hues signifies genuine production.
