Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was named after the port city of Imari from which it was shipped abroad starting in the seventeenth century. Renowned for its vibrant palette and intricate compositions, Imari ware became highly sought after by European aristocrats and collectors during the Edo and Meiji periods.

Imari wares are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain clay. They typically feature underglaze cobalt blue painting, overglaze iron-red enamel, and gilded highlights, fired multiple times at varying temperatures to set the metallic oxides and vitreous glazes.
