Description

A set of 3 early 19thc c1830 porcelain plates hand painted in the Imari palette of colours, dark blue, red, gold with some added pink and cornflower blue. The pattern is oriental in theme with a large vase and carnations. The plates have a scalloped and gilded edge and may have been part of a dessert service. The colours and design are typical of a Staffordshire factory such as Davenport. They are in exceptionally good condition with no signs of wear, hairlines or damage.

The Imari style originated in Japan during the seventeenth century and was named after the port from which it was exported. British potters in Staffordshire adopted the distinctive palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and gold during the late Georgian and Regency periods, creating regional interpretations on earthenware and ironstone.

These plates were typically crafted from earthenware, pearlware, or ironstone. The cobalt blue decoration was applied underglaze, while the iron red enamels and metallic leaf gilding were painted overglaze before undergoing additional furnace firings.

Authentic period pieces often feature slight variations in hand-painted details, subtle wear to the overglaze gilding, and three small spur marks on the underside from kiln supports. Unmarked bases were common for Staffordshire pottery produced during this period.

Displaying Imari ceramics on plate stands atop a sideboard or arranging them in a vertical wall gallery adds rich colour contrast and textural interest to both traditional and contemporary dining rooms.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding prolonged soaking. Do not place in modern dishwashers or use abrasive cloths, as this can wear away the delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
