This 16th century Flemish tapestry panel is woven in wool and silk with a blue and gold palette. A bearded male figure with a tall hat and draped robes sits on a throne under a canopy and next to an architectural column. The design includes detailed motifs of a seated figure, draped robes, and a bearded portrait in a Renaissance style well suited for a gentleman's library or a narrow wall space. Measuring 201 cm high and 82.5 cm wide, the rectangular textile depicts the historic figure with visible textiles, threads, and woven patterns. The piece works effectively when hung vertically in a hallway, study, or living room where it adds traditional woven texture and historic character to empty vertical expanses.

Flemish tapestries of the 16th century are renowned for their intricate figurative storytelling, detailed architectural backgrounds, and rich colour palettes derived from natural dyes. Produced primarily in workshops across Flanders, these textiles depicted biblical, mythological, and historical subjects for aristocratic patrons.

These tapestries were hand-woven using a combination of wool for the warp and thread structure, and dyed wool or silk threads for the detailed surface design. Higher-status commissions often incorporated metallic threads made of wrapped gold or silver wire.

Authentic period tapestries exhibit hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye oxidation consistent with age, and specific weaving techniques such as slit-tapestry construction. Examination of the reverse side often reveals original thread colors preserved from light exposure.

A vertical tapestry panel can be mounted inside a custom frame or hung on a neutral, plain wall to serve as a focal point. Its rich tones complement minimalist, contemporary spaces or traditional interiors alongside dark wood furniture.

Antique tapestries should be displayed away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent thread degradation and fading. Professional conservation mounting, support backing, and periodic low-suction surface cleaning by a specialist textile conservator are recommended.
