This 19th-century English Regency sofa table is constructed from warm brown elm with figured burr elm veneers throughout. The rectangular top has rounded corners, supported by two drop leaves and complemented by two frieze drawers fitted with circular brass handles. The twin pedestal supports lead down to splayed end legs ending in brass caps and castors. Measuring 72 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 66 cm deep with closed leaves, the table provides a practical surface when extended. Positioned in a modern home, this piece fits naturally behind a sofa or serves as a console table in a living room, hallway, or study. The compact proportions allow it to sit against a wall or float in an interior space while offering extra surface area via the drop leaves.

FAQs

Introduced during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, sofa tables were designed to sit directly behind a sofa or against a room perimeter, featuring drop leaves and frieze drawers for writing or housing small accoutrements.

Period sofa tables were constructed using solid and veneered hardwoods such as elm, mahogany, or rosewood, incorporating dovetail drawer joints, brass castors, and twin pedestal end supports linked by a stretcher bar.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate brass hardware, age-consistent wear on the feet and castors, and natural timber oxidisation across unvarnished surfaces such as drawer linings.

Position the table behind a low-backed sofa, along an entrance hallway as a console, or beneath a window, accessorising with a pair of table lamps, stacked books, or ceramic vessels.

Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, apply beeswax polish sparingly along the timber grain, and position the table away from direct heat sources and dampness to prevent timber movement or splitting.
