This nineteenth-century Regency sofa table is fashioned from warm brown figured mahogany with a polished finish. The freestanding piece presents a rectangular top with twin drop-leaf flaps at the sides, supported above two frieze drawers fitted with black turned wooden knob handles. The structure rests upon a central octagonal pedestal column that extends down to a shaped quadruped platform base with short turned feet. Visible details include crisp mouldings around the drawer fronts and pronounced wood grain patterns across the top surface. Measuring 69 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 63.5 cm deep when open, with a closed width of 91.5 cm, the table serves traditionally positioned at the back of a sofa in a living room, study, or drawing room. It functions as a display surface or writing area while offering practical storage space within the frieze drawers.

Originating in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain, sofa tables were designed with a narrow top and hinged drop flaps at both ends. They were typically positioned behind a sofa to assist with reading, writing, or serving tea.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period predominantly favoured high-grade imported timbers such as flame or figured mahogany, rosewood, and zebrawood. Dovetailed jointing, cast brass hardware, and hand-veneered surfaces characterised the construction.

Authentic Regency examples usually display distinctive features such as turned or faceted central pedestals, splayed legs terminating in brass castors or turned feet, and hand-cut dovetail joints on functional apron drawers.

A sofa table functions effectively positioned behind a freestanding sofa, in an entrance hall, or alongside a wall as a console table. Displaying contemporary ceramics, structured table lamps, or framed artwork balances the traditional woodwork.

Mahogany surfaces should be dusted regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and polished twice a year with natural beeswax to preserve the patina. Direct exposure to strong sunlight or heat sources should be avoided to prevent timber movement.
