Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

A Regency period centre table stands ready for use in a traditional or grand interior. The piece is constructed from dark brown rosewood veneer with rich timber grain visible across the circular top, paired with parcel gilt decoration in bright gold tones. A central turned pedestal supports the tabletop, embellished with deeply carved acanthus leaf foliage in a gilded finish above a sturdy triform base. The structure rests low on elaborately carved gilded scroll feet. Overall dimensions measure 135.5 cm wide by 135.5 cm deep, providing a substantial surface area for a reception room or central hallway. Position this table in the middle of a spacious living room or drawing room as a focal point for displaying decorative objects or arranging floral displays. The classical proportions and rich combination of dark wood and gold leaf suit formal dining rooms, libraries, or entrance halls in period homes. Everyday placement allows access from all sides, making it practical for open central spaces where a statement piece enhances the interior layout.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the rosewood veneer from drying or lifting, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and avoid liquid polishes on gilded surfaces.

Position the table in a grand entryway or drawing room centre to serve as an architectural focal point, topped with a simple floral arrangement or vase to highlight the wood grain and gilt details.

Authentic Regency pieces feature classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, lion paw feet, or scroll feet, alongside hand-cut joinery on tilt-top mechanisms and original patinated finishes on dark wood veneers.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period favoured exotic hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and zebrawood, frequently accented with brass marquetry, parcel gilding, or finely carved giltwood ornamentation.

A Regency centre table is a prominent piece of early 19th-century English furniture designed to stand in the middle of a hall, room, or foyer rather than against a wall. Popularised during the British Regency era, these tables typically feature circular tops supported by a central carved pedestal and a triform base.
