This Victorian centre table demonstrates the Anglo-Indian style of the nineteenth century, combining English design influences with Indian craftsmanship. Made from rosewood and padouk, the timber displays a dark brown finish with rich grain patterns across the rectangular top and canted corners. The edge of the top is decorated with a carved gadrooned moulding. The piece stands on a heavily carved central pedestal, supported by four carved scrolled brackets and terminating in detailed claw feet. Measuring 72 cm high, 122 cm wide and 90 cm deep, the table suits placement in a living room, study or hallway as a central display surface or writing desk.

Anglo-Indian furniture combines Western furniture forms, such as British Regency and Georgian silhouettes, with traditional Indian hand-carving techniques and native exotic hardwoods. Crafted during the colonial period, these pieces are distinguished by dense timbers like rosewood or padouk, gadrooned edges, and elaborate carved supports.

Primary timbers include dark rosewood, padouk, teak, and ebony, chosen for their durability and dense grain. Construction relies on traditional mortise and tenon joinery, solid timber core pedestals, hand-carved bracket supports, and hand-cast brass tilt mechanisms.

Position the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement or surface checking. Regular maintenance requires dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and periodic application of a high-quality beeswax polish along the direction of the grain.

A prominent centre table works effectively as a focal point in a grand entrance hall, library, or living space. Positioning the dark carved wood alongside contemporary artwork, clean-lined seating, or neutral upholstery creates a balanced contrast that emphasizes the historical craftsmanship.

Authentic period pieces exhibit heavy exotic hardwoods rather than softwoods or thin veneers, hand-planed undersides, and crisp hand-carved detailing with natural variations. Additional indicators include period-appropriate cast iron or brass fittings and traditional quadripartite pedestal bases.
