Description

One beautiful hand-crafted antique Kilim cushion, with a soft brown corduroy backing to compliment the stunning ancient colours and this cushion has a soft feather insert. This cushion has been created using an antique Anatolian Aydin kilim from circa 1870, which was beyond restoration. The early dyes of purple aubergines, and saffron yellows are truly wonderful with hints of pale blues. As this a very old piece of kilim it does have some marks on there, due to the kilims age. The curled latch-hook design is fabulous and full of character.

Each piece used for a cushion has been washed, but occasionally old marks are unable to be removed as this kilim is around 155 years old. There are eight cushions in total made from the same kilim - see all the images attached below.

Aydin is a region in the western area of Konya in Anatolia, located near the mediterranean and is famous for its traditional kilim weaving. Aydin kilims were woven in varying designs from prayer kilims to large kilims woven in two halves. A small hook motif derived from the eight-pointed star was used as an infill or border motif. The area today is an agricultural area where weaving has sadly ceased.

An antique kilim cushion is a decorative cushion crafted using panels of traditional flat-woven tapestry rugs, historically produced by nomadic weaving communities across Anatolia, Persia, and the Caucasus.

Kilims are woven using a slit-weave technique, featuring natural hand-spun wool warp and weft threads. The woven panels are typically backed with durable cotton or linen fabric and fitted with a zip closure.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool textures, subtle colour variations known as abrash from natural dyes, and geometric motifs created by flat-weave structural slits rather than printed designs.

Position a kilim cushion against neutral linen sofas, layer it on a dark leather armchair, or arrange it alongside complementary textured cushions on a window seat to add graphic depth.

Spot clean using a damp cloth and mild wool detergent, or seek professional dry cleaning. Avoid direct sunlight exposure to preserve vegetable dyes, and vacuum lightly without a rotating brush bar.
