Antique Kilim Cushion

19th century
Description

One beautiful hand-crafted antique Kilim cushion, with a soft brown corduroy backing to compliment the stunning ancient colours and this cushion has a soft feather insert.  This cushion has been created using an antique Anatolian Aydin kilim from circa 1870, which was beyond restoration. The early dyes of purple aubergines, and saffron yellows are truly wonderful with hints of pale blues. As this a very old piece of kilim it does have some marks on there, due to the kilims age.  The curled latch-hook design is fabulous and full of character.

Each piece used for a cushion has been washed, but occasionally old marks are unable to be removed as this kilim is around 155 years old. There are eight cushions in total made from the same kilim - see all the images attached below.

Aydin is a region in the western area of Konya in Anatolia, located near the mediterranean and is famous for its traditional kilim weaving.  Aydin kilims were woven in varying designs from prayer kilims to large kilims woven in two halves.  A small hook motif derived from the eight-pointed star was used as an infill or border motif.  The area today is an agricultural area where weaving has sadly ceased.

Purchase this antique Kilim cushion online and we will deliver it to your home.  You are very welcome to visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey to see our entire collection.  We are open Monday to Saturday 9.30-5.30pm by appointment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kilim cushions are crafted using flatwoven tapestry textiles historically produced across Anatolia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Traditionally woven by nomadic tribes for floor coverings, saddlebags, and wall hangings, salvaged sections of these flatweaves are repurposed into decorative home soft furnishings.

These cushions feature a flatweave front created using hand-spun sheeps wool on a cotton or wool warp, often incorporating a slit-weave technique to create defined geometric motifs. The reverse is typically finished with a plain heavy cotton or canvas backing and a concealed zip closure.

Authentic pieces exhibit slight irregularities in the hand-spun yarn, subtle variations in thread colour known as abrash, and distinct flat slit-weaving where color changes occur. Unlike machine-made imitations, authentic flatweaves lack a thick pile and display identical geometric patterns on the reverse of the weave.

Designers use Kilim cushions to introduce texture, warmth, and historic character to neutral contemporary seating. They pair effectively with leather armchairs, linen sofas, or layered atop neutral bedding in bohemian and eclectically styled interiors.

Vacuum gently using a suction attachment without a rotating brush bar to avoid loosening wool fibres. Treat spills immediately by blotting with cold water and a clean cloth, and utilise professional dry cleaning services specializing in vintage textiles for thorough maintenance.
