Description

One beautiful hand-crafted antique Kilim cushion, with a soft brown corduroy backing to compliment the stunning ancient colours and this cushion has a soft feather insert.  This cushion has been created using an antique Anatolian Hotamis kilim from circa 1850, which was beyond restoration.  The early dyes using rare greens, aubergine, pale blues and soft reds are truly wonderful. As this a very old piece of kilim it does have some marks on there, due to the kilims age.  Each piece used for a cushion has been washed, but occasionally old marks are unable to be removed as this kilim is around 175 years old.

Hotamis, a town located east of Konya and south of Karapinar in Central Anatolia, it is famous for its traditional kilim weaving.  Hotamis kilims are valued for their unique designs and craftsmanship, often reflecting the region’s weaving heritage.

This antique Anatolian tribal cushion dates from 1850 and is formed from an antique Hotamis kilim. The textile exhibits a slit-weave pattern rendered in terracotta, cream, brown, sage green, and pale blue, with serrated geometric borders enclosing diamond motifs and cross symbols. It measures 42 cm high by 42 cm wide and 2 cm deep. Visible details include signs of age such as minor marks retained despite washing, alongside early dyes in rare greens, aubergine, pale blues, and soft reds. The construction incorporates a soft brown corduroy backing and a soft feather insert. This square cushion works well placed at the end of a sofa in a living room, adding traditional textile interest to an interior setting.

A kilim cushion is a decorative soft furnishing constructed from fragments of traditional flat-woven tapestry carpets, historically crafted by nomadic weavers across Anatolia, Persia, and the Caucasus.

Traditional kilim cushions feature a front panel woven from hand-spun wool threads using a flat slit-weave technique, typically backed with heavy cotton or linen fabric and secured with a zip fastening.

Authentic kilim cushions exhibit natural yarn slubs, subtle abrash colour variations from hand-dyed wool, geometric tribal motifs, and a flatweave texture without a raised pile.

Position kilim cushions on modern neutral linen sofas, leather armchairs, or wooden benches to introduce rich geometric patterns, tactile interest, and warm earthy tones to contemporary rooms.

Preserve wool kilim cushions by vacuuming gently using a suction-only nozzle, spot cleaning spills immediately with cold water, and employing professional dry cleaning when necessary.
