This late Victorian serving tray dates from 1910 and measures 7 cm high by 57.1 cm wide and 38.1 cm deep. The piece is constructed from ebonised wood with a smooth black finish, complemented by silver-plated hardware and decorative elements. The elevated gallery rail features a scalloped profile with curled wirework motifs along the sides, supported on small ball feet. Turned black handles are fitted at opposing ends, while a blank silver-plated cartouche is inset into the centre of the tray bed. In a contemporary home, this serving tray is suited for display on a sideboard top in a dining room or gentlemen's library. It functions practically for serving drinks or holding accessories, while adding a monochromatic accent to traditional or transitional interiors through its polished silver and dark wood surfaces.

Ebonised gallery trays gained widespread popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, reflecting the eras taste for dark wood finishes offset by bright metallic detailing.

These trays were typically constructed from close-grained hardwoods such as beech, fruitwood, or walnut treated with dark stain to imitate solid ebony, fitted with electroplated nickel silver or silver-plated copper galleries.

Look for authentic wear on the ebonised surface revealing natural wood grain beneath, hand-screwed gallery fittings, and faint copper or brass bleed-through on raised areas of the silver plate.

Place the tray on a sideboard, coffee table, or bar cart to group glassware, decanters, or smaller decorative accessories, creating a defined visual anchor.

Wipe the ebonised surface with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly, while cleaning the silver-plated gallery with a soft silver-polishing cloth to prevent liquid damage to the wood.
