This large Victorian double inkstand by James Cartland and Sons is made from warm brass and glass, measuring 15 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. The piece comprises an ornate cast brass rectangular tray with pierced scrollwork, loop handles at each end, and insect-shaped pen rests on the front edge. Two cut, faceted glass ink reservoirs sit on the stand, topped with turned domed brass lids. A central storage compartment features a small cast tortoise on its lid. The brass exhibits normal minimal marks and wear commensurate with age and use, and one glass inkwell has some damage. Designed for a gentleman's library or office desk, the inkstand serves as both a practical desk accessory and a decorative centrepiece. The dual inkwells and integrated pen rests provide functional utility for traditional writing tasks, while the detailed Victorian casting brings character to a study workspace or home office. The substantial size makes it suitable for display on a large partner's desk or writing table, adding period charm to traditional interiors.

Victorian inkstands were central components of nineteenth-century correspondence desks, serving as functional holders for ink and pens while displaying intricate brassfoundry craftsmanship popularised during the industrial era.

These desk accessories were predominantly crafted using heavy cast brass or bronze bases paired with clear, moulded, or cut lead glass ink pots fitted with hinged metal caps.

Authentic pieces by Birmingham brassfounders James Cartland & Sons often feature stamped makers marks or registration numbers, crisp cast relief details, substantial weight, and period-correct glass fittings.

An antique inkstand can be styled atop a contemporary office desk, a dark wood bookcase, or a hallway console table to add structural interest and historical character.

Dust the brass surface gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive chemical polishes that strip naturally aged patina; glass reservoirs should be washed separately with lukewarm water.
