Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique French desk inkstand, historically known as an encrier, is a utilitarian writing set crafted from materials such as marble, brass, or bronze. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these items held inkpots, dip pens, and blotters for formal daily correspondence.

Traditional inkstands were constructed using carved veined marble, alabaster, slate, or polished hardwoods for the base tray. Associated components, including inkwell containers, hinged lids, and blotter handles, were typically cast from solid brass or bronze.

Authentic period examples exhibit original patina, natural mineral veining within the stone, and cast metal fittings showing age-appropriate wear. Internal glass or ceramic ink liners, alongside manual machining marks on threads and hinges, further indicate age.

Position the inkstand on an executive writing desk, study console, or library bookshelf to function as a paperweight and sculptural accent. Combining stone and metal elements adds visual weight and textural contrast to modern home office spaces.

Clean marble bases using a soft cloth dampened with water and mild pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic chemicals that etch natural stone. Metal components should be dusted with a dry cloth to preserve accumulated surface oxidation and historic patina.
