This Victorian cast iron doorstop dates from 1860 and takes the form of a rampant lion. Modelled in a dark brown finish with its original paint, the piece depicts the lion resting its paws upon a scrollwork shield, positioned above a moulded pedestal base with symmetrical scrolling decoration and a central mask detail. The casting includes a visible registered date lozenge on the reverse, alongside natural surface wear and weathered patination appropriate to its age. The doorstop measures 40 cm high, 26 cm wide at the base, and 7 cm deep. It functions as a decorative accessory beside the front door or within a hallway to hold interior doors open.

Cast iron doorstops, also known as door porters, became popular during the nineteenth century in Britain and North America. Designed with integrated handles or heavy flat-backed bases, they were manufactured to hold open heavy timber doors in historic homes.

Traditional doorstops were produced using sand-casting techniques where molten iron was poured into carved sand moulds. The cooled iron pieces were subsequently hand-finished, painted, or bronzed to provide a protective layer against oxidation.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit smooth seam lines from two-part sand moulds, natural age wear on raised surfaces, and weight appropriate to solid iron. Original examples typically feature subtle casting imperfections and aged paint rather than pristine modern coatings.

Heavy cast iron doorstops function effectively beside entryway doors, inside open fireplaces, or positioned as sculptural bookends on robust low shelving. Their dark metal finish provides structural visual contrast against light plaster walls and natural timber floors.

Clean cast iron using a soft dry brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust from detailed relief work. To prevent rust without damaging existing paint or patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax and buff gently.
