This pair of Victorian door stops consists of two cast iron figures depicting military officers in period dress. Each standing officer wears a detailed military uniform with fringed epaulettes, a sash crossing the chest, breeches, boots, and a plumed bicorne hat, while resting one hand on the hilt of a grounded sword. The figures are rendered in a solid black finish and stand upon integrated, rectangular stepped plinth bases. Both items show a heavy, substantial form suited to holding doors open in a gentleman's library or beside a front door in a traditional home. Measuring 38 cm in height, these functional decorative accessories reflect the industrial craftsmanship of the Victorian era.

Cast iron doorstops, historically referred to as door porters, gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century in Britain. As industrial foundry techniques advanced, manufacturers produced cast iron figures inspired by military heroes, folklore, and botanical motifs to functional effect in grand homes.

These objects were produced using molten iron poured into sand moulds, resulting in heavy, solid forms often cast with hollowed backs to reduce weight while preserving structural rigidity. Following cooling, the metal was finished with dark enamel paints or chemical blackening to prevent surface oxidation.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display crisp casting detail alongside natural wear, subtle surface pitting, and oxidation on unpainted areas. Authentic cast iron items typically exhibit seams along the moulding lines and possess significant density relative to modern alloy reproductions.

Heavy cast iron figures function effectively as functional doorstops along entryways or hallway passages. Alternatively, paired pieces can be positioned on open shelving, fireplace hearths, or desk surfaces to serve as decorative bookends within contemporary spaces.

Dust cast iron regularly using a dry brush or microfibre cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. To protect against moisture and rust, apply a light coat of clear paste wax or microcrystalline wax using a soft cloth, buffing gently to maintain the surface finish.
