This Victorian cast iron door stop takes the form of a saddled horse mounted upon a rectangular plinth base. Modelled in dark charcoal with a slightly rusty patina, the piece displays a detailed cast bridle, a saddle with stirrup straps, and stands 21 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Designed for heavy daily use, it sits solidly beside the front door to keep interior spaces open. The single-piece casting provides exceptional stability for practical duty in a traditional entranceway or hallway. The aged painted surface and tactile sculptural motifs fit neatly into an English Country House interior aesthetic.

Cast iron doorstops, also known as door porters, gained widespread popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries as decorative yet functional items. Equestrian motifs were particularly common due to the popularity of horse racing, hunting, and agricultural themes in Victorian and Edwardian households.

These items were produced by pouring molten iron into sand moulds, resulting in solid, heavy figures capable of holding weighted interior doors open. Once cooled, the rough castings were hand-finished, seam lines were ground down, and a protective coat of paint or lacquer was applied.

Authentic period pieces typically display fine moulding details, natural surface patina, and smooth wear along the base and contact points. Original castings often show slight surface irregularities or seam lines from two-part sand moulds, alongside authentic oxidisation rather than artificially applied rust.

A cast iron doorstop serves as a functional piece beside an internal doorway and as a decorative object on a fireplace hearth, bookshelf, or console table. Its dark metallic texture provides an anchoring accent when paired with natural timber flooring or stone tiles.

To prevent corrosion, keep cast iron in a dry indoor environment and dust regularly with a soft brush or cloth. If necessary, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax or mineral oil to protect the metal finish and preserve the existing patina.
