Exceptional Quality 19th Century Antique Library Table Attributed to T & G Seddon

19th century
Description

Exceptional quality 19th century antique library table, writing table or sofa table attributed to the Thomas and George Seddon. The Seddon family held a Royal Warrant for much of the 19th century and not without good reason. Their extremely fine quality furniture was supplied to several Royal residences including much of the refurnishing of Windsor Castle for George IV between 1827 and 1829. As one would imagine for something made regardless of cost, this table is very well made indeed, with two absolutely vast symmetrical sections of exotic bookmatched rosewood used for the top, which is an absolute joy to behold. The turned support is solid rosewood decorated with stylised tulip and reeded decoration. The roundels on each end, also of solid rosewood, are typical of designs by Seddon. There are casters recessed in the solid rosewood feet, the feet with a variation of the tulip design found on the stretcher. The turned section above each foot is also a typical Seddon design. The exceptional construction of the table continues with the use of mahogany for the underside and drawer linings, very crisp turning and carving and precision dovetails or tenons at every join and false drawers to the reverse side. Being narrow in depth, tall for the period, and freestanding, this table would be very useful as a sofa table, library table or writing table whilst being thin enough to use as a side table against the wall in a hallway, dining or drawing room. The locks are stamped "J. Child". Despite its elegant appearance, this table is extremely heavy, a testament to the exceptional construction and the very dense grained exotic timbers from which it was made.

This nineteenth-century library table displays a rectangular top with rounded corners, executed in exotic bookmatched rosewood with a warm brown figured grain. The William IV piece incorporates three frieze drawers fitted with small round dark wooden handles, alongside twin pedestal supports featuring carved tulip motifs, reeded vertical columns, and turned roundels. The structure rests on solid rosewood plinth feet with detailed carving and recessed casters, and includes stamped brass locks marked "J. Child" on the interior components. Practical dimensions measure 74 cm high, 145 cm wide, and 65 cm deep. Suitable for placement as a freestanding writing desk in a study, a sofa table behind living room seating, or a decorative side table against a hallway wall, the table provides functional workspace while maintaining a slim footprint. The dense rosewood construction ensures stability for daily use, while the traditional design complements both period and contemporary interior schemes.

A 19th-century library table is a substantial writing desk characterised by a wide rectangular top, shallow frieze drawers, and sturdy pedestal or leg supports designed for reading, writing, and administrative tasks.

Cabinetmakers of this era primarily utilized high-grade hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, often applying figured veneers to table surfaces and employing solid timber for structural pedestals.

Authentic pieces display period-specific joinery such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass locks, natural patination across timber surfaces, and carved elements consistent with Regency, William IV, or Victorian styles.

These tables can serve as freestanding writing desks in a dedicated home office, statement centre tables in an entryway hall, or console surfaces positioned behind a sofa in a living space.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying natural beeswax polish occasionally along the grain, while keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or fading.
