GILLOWS of LANCASTER: A very fine quality William IV rosewood WRITING | READING | WORK table in particularly fine condition.
The many features of this iconic Gillows metamorphic table include: the original tooled leather sliding and height adjustable writing / reading surface. There are two folding leaves (one to each side) held up by foldaway lopers, extending the tabletop width from 28 inches to its maximum 47 inches. There are two long drawers (one fitted for writing implements and ink bottles); two mahogany lined central drawers. whilst the whole piece is supported on finely turned and reeded solid rosewood legs, terminating in their original brass castors.
An almost identical design (although more ornate) can be found illustrated in the 2 volume book ''Gillows'' by Susan E. Stuart (Volume I, page 305) the table is on view at the Judge''s Lodgings Museum in Lancaster.
A lovely piece and a gorgeous colour.
