This nineteenth-century William IV period writing table is constructed from solid mahogany and finished in a rich brown colour. The rectangular top has rounded moulded corners and features a dark greyish-blue leather inset surface with gilt tooling along the perimeter. Beneath the writing surface, the frieze incorporates four mahogany-lined drawers fitted with original working locks and supplied keys. The table is raised on substantial carved trestle end supports resting on solid rectangular platform bases with detailed scroll feet and concealed brass castors. A turned, tapering stretcher connects the two pedestal bases centrally for stability. The table measures 73 cm high, 135 cm wide, and 75 cm deep overall. In a modern home, this piece suits a traditional study, a gentleman's library, or a home office space. It provides a generous working surface for writing or computer use while offering practical drawer storage for papers and stationery. The desk functions well placed centrally in a room or against a wall, combining period character with everyday utility.

William IV period furniture, dating from roughly 1830 to 1837, marks the transition between classical Regency styles and heavier Victorian aesthetics. Pieces from this era typically feature substantial proportions, rich timbers such as mahogany and rosewood, and bold carved motifs including scrollwork and acanthus leaves.

Writing tables from this era were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Writing surfaces were frequently inset with gold-tooled leather or baize to create a smooth surface for pen and paper, while internal drawer linings often used oak or pine.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, genuine wear along the base and castors, and period-correct lock mechanisms. The timber will show natural patination, subtle unevenness from hand-planing, and signs of age around handled areas and feet.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office or living room, pairing the dark timber with modern neutral wall tones and contemporary task lighting. Combining historical mahogany furniture with streamlined modern seating creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the wood from warping and the leather from drying out. Clean the timber with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax periodically, while applying specialized leather conditioner to maintain the inset surface.
