70 X 70cm Antique Jaf Tribes Complete Saddlebag

19th century
Description

I have a huge soft spot for these beautiful, colourful old saddlebags. In days gone by, I held not one but two exhibitions dedicated solely to Jaf bags, in my small gallery in Milan. I still have a few catalogues. You identify the Jaf tribe through the use of diamonds as the main design feature and it's amazing just how much variation you can fit into one design. The best ones have pure natural dyes, and an impressive array of them, as seen here. Thick pile with the original plain weave back, would greatly benefit from a deep wash. I can do this for an additional charge.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Hand-spun wool pile and foundation: nomadic weaving on a portable loom.
Intact flatweave wool back: complete original construction preserved.
Traditional stepped diamond motifs: customary tribal patterns of the Jaf Kurds.
Varied yarn shades: small dye batches typical of 19th-century tribal textiles.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Kurdish tribal antique saddlebag face, dating from 1890, exhibits the traditional hand-woven wool construction of the Jaf people. The multicoloured design displays a prominent diamond lattice pattern filled with hooked medallion motifs, framed by a patterned geometric border and finished with woven closure loops and fringe along the bottom edge. Thick pile yarn in various vibrant shades forms the intricate repeat, showing appropriate signs of age and handling across the surface. Measuring approximately 69 cm by 69 cm, the square textile functions well when displayed on a narrow wall space in a living room, hallway, or study. Hanging the piece flat allows the detailed tribal motifs and varied natural dye palette to become a striking focal point within eclectic or bohemian interior schemes.

A Jaf tribal saddlebag, traditionally known as a khorjin, is a hand-woven double bag created by nomadic Kurdish weavers of the Jaf tribe to transport possessions across pack animals.

These textiles were hand-woven using hand-spun sheeps wool dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments, featuring a durable combination of flatweave backs and hand-knotted pile fronts.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool textures, subtle colour variations known as abrash, traditional geometric diamond lattice patterns, and original woven closure loops or tassels along the edges.

These versatile textiles are frequently mounted and framed as focal wall art, draped over wooden furniture, hung on decorative rods, or converted into structured accent cushions.

Keep the wool away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum gently using suction only without a beater bar, and consult a specialist rug restorer for professional cleaning.
