This Victorian side table dates from the 19th century, specifically circa 1870, and originates from the workshop of Howard & Son of Berners Street, London, complete with an enamel plaque and impressed makers numbers. The piece is constructed from solid dark brown rosewood with a warm timber grain, finished with a smooth polish. The circular top features a rounded and concave profile moulded edge above a triangular frieze decorated with reed and concave moulds and a bow silhouette lower edge. Three ring-turned and tapered columns include reed caps and carved central spiral-turned or wyvern reeded orbs. The legs connect to a matching rounded and concave profile edged lower triangular shelf before sweeping down to scrolled block feet. Practical in scale, the table stands 73 cm high with a diameter of 60.5 cm. This piece suits placement at the end of a sofa or in a reception room corner as an occasional stand for a lamp, books or decorative items, fitting easily into traditional and English country house interiors.

Victorian rosewood furniture, popular during the mid-to-late 19th century, is characterised by rich, dark grain patterns, intricate turned detailing, and compact proportions designed for versatile placement within drawing rooms.

High-end 19th-century tables were commonly crafted using solid rosewood or rosewood veneers over mahogany, featuring hand-turned supports, dovetailed joinery, and decorative aprons.

Authentic Howard & Sons pieces often feature stamped markings or castors bearing the makers name, original paper labels affixed under the frame, precision joinery, and high-quality timber selections.

Position a Victorian rosewood side table beside a contemporary armchair or sofa to provide textural contrast, finishing the surface with a modern ceramic lamp or simple brass accessories.

Position rosewood furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber movement or fading. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste periodically.
