This Victorian lamp table dates from 1870 and belongs to the Victorian and Gothic design styles. The piece takes the form of a side table measuring 71 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. Constructed from a solid rosewood frame with rosewood veneers, the table presents a dark brown colour palette with rich figure grain. The design includes an elongated serpentine-shaped top above a frieze adorned with applied scroll-form mouldings and drop finials at the corners. Carved detailing decorates the upright supports, which stand on scroll feet and connect via a turned central stretcher. In a contemporary home, this side table serves well as an end-of-a-sofa surface or a lamp table in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The sturdy construction provided by the under-stretcher ensures stability for everyday functional use, while the traditional Victorian aesthetic adds period character to an interior scheme. The timber finish highlights the natural grain patterns, complementing traditional or eclectic interior spaces alike.

Victorian rosewood furniture is defined by dense Brazilian or East Indian timber exhibiting deep brown to reddish hues with dark contrasting grain lines. Popularised during the 19th century, these pieces frequently feature curvilinear profiles, French-polished finishes, and turned or hand-carved decorative elements.

These tables were typically constructed with a solid timber core, such as pine or mahogany, covered in decorative rosewood veneers. Carved legs, stretchers, and feet were often formed from solid rosewood or stained hardwood to match the veneered surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display distinct natural grain variation, genuine aged patina, and traditional hand-cut joinery underneath or on structural supports. Additional indicators include hand-carved details, smooth hand-finished undersides, and natural shrinkage marks in the wood alignment consistent with age.

Dark rosewood furniture acts as a grounding visual element when placed alongside light modern upholstery, neutral wall paint, or minimalist architecture. The organic grain and carved silhouette create texture and historic contrast within contemporary living rooms, foyers, or hallways.

To preserve the timber finish, dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged exposure to strong sunlight to prevent veneer movement and fading.
