Antique Victorian Rosewood Work Box Side Table

19th century
Description

A gorgeous early Victorian rosewood work box side table, made in England and dating from around the 1840-1860 period.

It is of extremely fine quality and is a very useful size. The rosewood has a stunning colour tone and wonderful grain patterns, the top has a beautiful pierced brass gallery around the edges. There are two drawers with lovely original green paper lining, the top drawer is a regular shape, the lower drawer has a stunning fabric design on the outside, and dips down into a lovely inverted arch shape. This was originally intended as a work table but it makes a beautiful occasional side table. The base is beautifully carved and sits on brass casters. This is nicely finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing table.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there, and a lovely overall patina.

The wood is Santos rosewood, which does not require a CITES or article 10.

A Victorian work box side table is a specialized piece of 19th-century occasional furniture designed to store embroidery, sewing accessories, and small implements. It typically features a flat surface top, a single drawer, and a fabric-lined basket or well suspended beneath.

These tables were commonly crafted from high-quality hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany. They often incorporated decorative brass galleries, silk or tapestry fabric wells, and brass castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces feature period joinery such as hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, original brass fittings, hand-pierced or carved scroll supports, and natural aging to the timber veneer and metalwork.

A work table serves well as an occasional side table beside an armchair, an accent piece in a hallway, or a compact surface within a reading nook to display books and decorative ceramics.

Clean the wood structure regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood warping, veneer lifting, or fabric fading.
