This George II period mahogany torchere dates from 1750 and exemplifies classic English Country House style. The piece is fashioned from dark brown mahogany, displaying a rich timber colour, visible surface patination, and an untouched original condition. The design incorporates a dished top, a slender turned baluster column with multiple mouldings and swelling sections, and a tripod base ending in smooth pad feet. Measuring 122 cm high with a 20 cm wide and 20 cm deep profile, this compact stand suits display placement in an empty corner of a traditional hallway, living room or study. It provides a slender vertical surface intended for holding a small decorative object, bowl or candle holder.

A torchere, originating in 17th-century France and widely produced in Georgian Britain, is a tall, slender stand designed primarily to hold candles or oil lamps to illuminate rooms.

George II torcheres were typically crafted from solid mahogany, featuring turned central shafts, dish-moulded tops, and tripod bases joined with hand-cut jointing.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-turned column detailing, subtle timber shrinkage across circular tops, and hand-shaped tripod leg joints beneath the central pillar.

A tall torchere can be positioned in an unused alcove or corner to display a trailing houseplant, a ceramic vessel, or a modern pillar candle, adding vertical structure to a room.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking or fading, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain.
