The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated this Georgian Mahogany Wine Cooler to the 18th Century.
Circa 1770
George III period mahogany and brass bound wine cooler.
The stand with four turned out-swept legs terminating in brass wheel casters. The lion’s head handle relates directly to a wine cooler commissioned by Gillows in 1774. A distinctive hardware motif matching original Gillow commissions from the 1770s.

These iconic cast brass or ormolu lion masks are most frequently found adorning late 18th-century George III period brass-bound wine coolers and cellarets / cellarets. Gillows of Lancaster famously employed these fierce, classical features, with the handles often cast to resemble a traditional heraldic lion's head holding a heavy brass drop ring in its jaws.

Because of the meticulously detailed nature of the Gillow archives pieces bearing this specific lion's head handle relate directly to recorded commissions made by the firm in the mid-1770s.
