Description

Handsome George III Inlaid Mahogany Octagonal Wine Cooler, attributed to Gillows, c.1790

A fine and elegant top quality late 18th century George III period cellarette of octagonal form, crafted in richly figured mahogany with a warm, mellow colour and a lovely aged patina, attributed to Gillows. The hinged flat top is finished with mahogany banding, while ebony stringing and delicate satinwood inlay add refined detail throughout. Opening the lid reveals the original fitted interior, with divisions for wine bottles and a central well for ice, lined in metal to keep the contents cool. Original brass lifting handles to either side make it easy to carry, and a central keyhole escutcheon is fitted with a working lock and key, so your best bottles stay safe. It stands on its original base with elegant square reeded tapering legs, finished with small brass castors, so it can be moved with ease. A rare survivor and a practical piece of period furniture. Introduced during the eighteenth century, George III wine coolers, or cellarettes, were designed to store wine bottles on ice within the dining room, allowing hosts to serve chilled beverages without servants leaving the room.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense West Indian mahogany, featuring decorative boxwood or satinwood inlay, brass drop handles, keyhole escutcheons, and internal zinc or lead sheet linings to resist moisture.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass fittings, hand-planed mahogany interiors, and age-consistent surface patination around handles, keyholes, and base castors.

An antique wine cooler works well as a side table, plant stand, or focal accent placed in a dining room alcove, hallway corner, or study alongside contemporary upholstered seating.

Maintain timber integrity by keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly, and dusting surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth.
