This nest of four tables originates from England and dates from the 1930 period, following a Georgian style. Constructed from solid mahogany with rich brown timber tones and flame mahogany veneer, the pieces display a rectangular format with raised top edges and nested configuration. Notable details visible include an oval inlay panel on the tabletop surface, turned spindle legs, curved stretchers uniting the lower framework, and shaped trestle feet at the base. Recent re-polishing provides a clean finish across the surfaces while retaining the traditional timber grain. Practical in scale for everyday placement, the largest table measures 59 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. This nested set functions well in a living room arrangement, fitting neatly at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair to provide flexible surface space. When not in use, the smaller tables slide smoothly beneath the main table to save floor space while maintaining a tidy appearance in a traditional interior setting.

Nests of tables, historically known as quartetto tables, were introduced in the late 18th century during the Georgian period. Designed to stack neatly together when not in use, they provided space-saving surface solutions for tea service and casual entertaining in English drawing rooms.

These tables are commonly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often featuring inlaid oval panels of contrasting timbers such as satinwood. Construction highlights include slender turned spindle legs, cockbeaded edges, and curved stretchers designed to support the frame while accommodating the nesting function.

Authentic period pieces and high-grade reproductions feature precise joinery, thin timber profiles, hand-carved details, and smooth sliding grooves beneath the tabletops. Look for natural patination, subtle hand-planing marks, and age-consistent wear along the runners and foot bases.

A nest of tables offers versatile functionality when placed beside a sofa or armchair, allowing individual surfaces to be pulled out for guests as needed. In modern living spaces, they can be displayed partially cascading to showcase the tiered timber tops and decorative inlay patterns.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve the lustre. Keep the tables away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or fading of the veneer.
