This nineteenth-century Chinese low table derives from the Qing Dynasty and takes the form of a square side table made from dark brown rosewood with a wax polish finish. The construction incorporates a floating panel top framed by a moulded edge, above straight legs that terminate in scroll feet. Pierced aprons beneath the tabletop display intricate hand-carved leaf and foliate decoration accompanied by geometric fretwork corners. The woodwork shows natural grain variations typical of dense tropical hardwoods alongside subtle surface patination from age and use. Measuring 55.5 cm wide by 55 cm deep and 51.5 cm high, this compact low table functions well as a lamp table or coffee table positioned at the end of a sofa in a gentleman's library, sitting room or study. The sturdy frame provides a stable surface for holding books, lighting or decorative objects while adding traditional craftsmanship to modern interior schemes.

Low tables in traditional Chinese design were originally created for use on raised heated platforms, known as kang, or as low tea tables in reception areas. During the Qing dynasty, these tables were constructed from high-density hardwoods and served both functional and decorative purposes within domestic settings.

Traditional Chinese furniture relies on complex joinery techniques, such as mortise-and-tenon joints, without the use of metal nails or glue. High-grade hardwoods like rosewood (Hongmu) are favoured for their dense grain, rich tone, and stability under changing climate conditions.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative aprons, floating top panels to allow wood expansion, and hand-finished joinery. Visual indicators include natural oxidisation within the grain and subtle variations in hand-carved motifs.

A Chinese rosewood low table works as a central coffee table, an accent piece beside low seating, or a raised platform for sculptural displays. Its dark timber tones contrast with neutral upholstery and contemporary textures.

Keep hardwood furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and cracking. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish and patina.
