This nineteenth-century Japanese Edo Period netsuke is a small, carved wooden sculpture shaped as a recumbent ox with curved horns. The dark brown timber finish reveals a detailed hand-carved hair texture across the animal's body, along with visible himotoshi cord holes and realistic facial features including a defined eye and snout. The piece measures 4.5 cm high, 8.5 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep, making it perfectly proportioned for display within a gentleman's library collection. Placed on a bookshelf, this sculpture brings an authentic element of traditional craftsmanship to a study or living area interior. The compact dimensions allow it to sit comfortably alongside books, manuscripts, and small decorative objects on display shelves. Collectors of Japanese wood carvings will find that the traditional recumbent ox motif and naturalistic surface texturing integrate seamlessly into both classic and modern domestic settings as a subtle desktop or shelf accent.

A netsuke is a small, hand-carved toggle developed in Japan during the Edo period. Because traditional kimono lacked pockets, personal items were suspended from the obi sash using cords, with the netsuke acting as a decorative stopper to prevent the cord from slipping.

Carvers used a variety of natural materials, most notably dense hardwoods such as boxwood, cypress, and ebony, as well as marine ivory, antler, and horn. Wood was often favoured for its warm tactile qualities and fine grain suitable for intricate carving.

Authentic period examples feature functional cord holes (himotoshi), natural age-related patina, and smooth wear patterns from handling. Signature marks (mei) from known carvers, fine surface detailing, and the natural oxidisation of the wood grain also help determine age and origin.

These tactile sculptures are best displayed under a glass cloche, within a glazed cabinet, or atop a stacked set of art books on a bookshelf. Arranging them alongside larger ceramics creates an engaging contrast in scale.

Keep wooden carvings away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity, which can cause cracking or warping. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush and avoid applying chemical polishes or water.
